The Power of Peer Roundtables

The Power of Peer Roundtables

There is no shortage of business advice. Articles, podcasts, webinars and consultants can all offer useful ideas. But sometimes the most helpful answer comes from another person who understands the LBM business and has dealt with the same kind of challenge.

That is the value of a roundtable.

BLD Connection roundtables give members a trusted group of industry peers they can turn to for perspective, ideas and practical advice. The discussion is based on what is actually happening in lumberyards and building material businesses. Members talk about what they are trying, what is working, where they are struggling and how they have handled similar situations.

That kind of peer input can save time and help leaders make better decisions. Someone considering a new process may hear from another member who has already tested it. A staffing challenge may lead to an idea that worked at another company. A discussion about inventory, delivery or margins can reveal a different way to approach a familiar problem.

Roundtables also give members time to look beyond the demands of the day. When leaders regularly set aside time to talk through operations, goals and challenges, it is easier to spot areas that need attention and identify ideas worth putting into practice.

Accountability is another reason the format works. Members return to the group throughout the year, so discussions do not end when a meeting does. Participants can report back on changes they have made, ask additional questions and get feedback as plans develop.

As one BLD roundtable participant put it:

“During our roundtable group meetings, peers share ideas, talk about what’s happening in our businesses, and how we handle different situations. We have fun, but we also hold each other accountable year after year. The relationships we build and the ability to tap into those resources throughout the year are truly priceless. I wouldn’t miss it.”

Roundtable Options for BLD Members

BLD Connection offers several roundtable options based on role, business needs and preferred format.

Owner/Manager Roundtables provide dedicated time for deeper discussion of operations, leadership and growth.

Virtual Roundtable Learning Series includes six 90-minute online meetings covering topics such as operational and financial excellence, merchandising, marketing, margins, workforce challenges and leadership.

Yard & Logistics Leadership Roundtable gives yard managers, supervisors, dispatchers and delivery coordinators a forum focused specifically on safety, inventory control, delivery performance, customer service and frontline leadership.

The topics may be different, but the reason roundtables work stays the same. You have a group of people who understand the business, are willing to share what they know and can become a resource when you need another perspective.

For members looking for practical ideas and support from others who know the LBM industry, a roundtable can be time well spent.
