Minnesota Implements Salary Transparency Law
Minnesota Implements Salary Transparency Law
Minnesota is taking a bold step toward promoting workplace transparency and fairness. Beginning January 1, 2025, employers in the state will be required to include salary ranges and a general description of benefits in all job postings. This groundbreaking policy, signed into law by Governor Walz as part of an Omnibus Labor and Industry bill, is expected to set a new standard for pay equity and hiring practices across the state.
Under this law, businesses with 30 or more employees in Minnesota must disclose:
- Starting salary ranges for the position.
- A general description of the benefits offered, such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid leave.
- Any additional forms of compensation, including bonuses or profit-sharing opportunities.
The goal is to empower job seekers with clear information, reduce wage disparities, and foster trust between employers and prospective employees. Minnesota joins a growing number of states adopting similar measures to address pay equity and promote transparency in hiring.
Employers are encouraged to act now to ensure compliance by updating their job posting templates and internal processes. Organizations that take proactive steps will not only meet legal requirements but also position themselves as leaders in fair and transparent hiring practices.
Michigan, Missouri & South Dakota have also considered legislation on this issue however no action has been taken at this time.
